Rapid Prototyping
Bringing Your New Products to the Market Faster
Advanced Prototyping's rapid prototyping facility features state-of-the-art 3D Systems equipment run by experienced, highly skilled engineers. API will transform a design into a high-quality prototype with speed, precision, efficiency, and economy. A major benefit of rapid prototyping is the ability to fabricate a prototype quickly and with flexibility. Engineers can test ideas and easily make changes at very low cost. We're proud to have helped "speed-up" product development in many industries for over two decades through this revolutionary technology.
What is Rapid Prototyping?
Known as 3D printing, rapid prototyping is an additive manufacturing technology. The 3D prototyping process begins with a design from modeling or CAD software. The 3D printing equipment interprets the CAD data and lays down or "prints" consecutive layers of liquid, powder, or sheet material that build-up the 3D model from a series of cross sections. The prototype layers that match up to the virtual cross section from the CAD model, are automatically fused together to generate the final product shape.
API will use the following rapid prototyping techniques depending on your part requirements, that best emphasize the exact characteristics that you need. Mentioned are features and benefits of each prototyping method. All offer highly complex, geometric part shapes, and features:
SLA (Stereolithography):
- Many plastic and composite materials to choose from
- Often used where form, fit, and assembly are critical
- Excellent part finish and fine feature definition
- SLA parts are delicate and most useful for visual verification
SLS (Selective Laser Sintering):
- Material used is nylon, glass-filled nylon, and polystyrene
- Very good fine feature definition
- More economical for multiple components
- Useful for functional testing of components
Urethane Part Manufacturing:
- High-quality
- Lower upfront tooling costs
- Excellent small detail definition
- Multiple colors available
- Urethane affords a longer part service life
The Rapid Prototyping Process - A Feedback Loop
API will work closely with you to have your design evolve into the exact product that you've envisioned. Rapid prototyping usually involves multiple repetitions of a three step process until a finished prototype is realized.
Create the prototype
Manufacture the customer's product or design into a 3D model according to their standards and best practices.
Review
Evaluation and analysis of the prototype with the customer to determine whether it meets their needs and goals.
Refine
Customer feedback is given to identify areas that need to be refined or substantially changed.
